What you’ll learn
This course will provide senior dangerous goods/hazmat managers and dangerous goods safety advisors with the knowledge to interpret the requirements of the International Maritime Dangerous Goods or IMDG Code as they apply to consignments of non-bulk and bulk dangerous goods/hazmat being shipped by sea transport.
This course is designed for personnel who have either no previous dangerous goods/hazmat compliance training, or those seeking refresher training to renew their certificate.
The contents of the IMDG Code that are covered include:
- Legislation, and global regulations that control the shipment of dangerous goods/hazmat
- General provisions of the IMDG Code
- Classification of dangerous substances and articles, and identifying the proper shipping name
- Referencing the dangerous goods list
- Safety data sheets
- Limited and excepted quantities
- Packing dangerous goods/hazmat
- Tank and bulk container provisions
- Consignment procedures for packages, IBCs and cargo transport units
- Preparation and completion of transport documents
- Fumigated cargo transport units
- Construction and testing of packagings and IBCs
- Construction and testing of portable tanks
- Construction, testing and inspection of multiple-element gas containers
- Construction and testing of road tank and road gas elements vehicles
- Construction, testing and inspection of bulk containers
- General stowage provisions
- General segregation provisions
- Packing and use of cargo transport units
- Stowage and segregation on container ships, ro-ro ships, and general cargo ships
- Emergency situations involving dangerous goods/hazmat
- Dangerous goods/hazmat in port areas
- U.S. 49 CFR requirements for domestic and international sea freight shipments
Successful completion will enable you to prepare dangerous goods/hazmat consignments for carriage by sea and load and unload cargo transport units for the duration of the current edition of the IMDG Code.
To maintain the currency of your training, you will be required to complete refresher training when the next edition becomes available and before it becomes mandatory.
Course format
First-time students are encouraged to learn at their own pace, taking time to review video content and test their knowledge as they progress, while returning students and those with prior accreditation will have complete access to all course content but may choose to only focus on the sections that we have highlighted with recent changes or where they may have identified knowledge gaps before proceeding to the assessments.
Your performance will be based on an assessment at the end of the training course. This assessment will properly and fairly measure your competency against industry-defined benchmarks.

To complete this course access to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code is required while you are undertaking the learning and assessments parts of the course.

How do I get my certificate?
After successfully completing the assessment, you'll be able to download and print your certificate.
To download and print your certificate, simply 'Log in' and navigate to your 'My learning' page and click the 'View certificate' link against the name of your course course.
How do my staff access their courses?
Once your staff’s enrolment is completed through your domain administrator (B2B), you will receive an enrolment confirmation with details of how to login. Contact us if you still haven’t received your enrolment confirmation.
